October 24, 2002 Improved City Name Searching
Looking for radio stations in Quonochontaug, Rhode Island, but don't quite remember how to spell it? The city name search engine will now try to guess the correct spelling of a city name, even if you don't type it exactly right.
October 9, 2002 Added LPFM Stations
There are now several hundred "Low Power FM" stations in the U.S. These stations are now a part of the Radio-Locator database and can be searched for just like any other station. Click here for more information about LPFM stations.
September 8, 2002 Improved database design
Our database design has been made more efficient. This should speed up most searches.
March 20, 2002 Moving to a New Server!
Our old hosting facility is being shut down, so we are in the process of relocating to Hosting.com. Hopefully this will be a smooth transition, but there might be minor glitches over the next couple of days.
February 8, 2002 Privacy Policy
We have created a privacy policy that can be viewed here.
January 10, 2002 Radio-Locator Cool Stuff Online Store
Radio-Locator has partnered with CafePress.com to provide our users with some excellent Radio-Locator merchandise. We have T-Shirts, Sweatshirts, Mugs, and Mousepads for sale. Check out the cool stuff here!
November 3, 2001 Radio-Locator Moves to a New ISP
We moved our servers to a new ISP, closer to our office in Boston. Unfortunately, the transition was not particularly smooth, which resulted in a few days of downtime. We apologize for the inconvenience, although we are now back up and running at full capacity.
October 25, 2001 Radio Coverage Patterns now Available
We now have radio coverage maps available for most U.S. radio stations. Click the yellow "info" icon Info next to a station and then click "View Pattern" to see how far that station's signal is broadcast.
September 18, 2001 Radio-Locator parts company with Lime Radio
The Lime Radio operation of the Lime Group officially closes. The entire Radio-Locator website is now owned and operated by Theodric Technologies.
September 11, 2001 Users Around the World Look to Internet Radio for News about the Terrorist Attacks
As the horrible events of September 11 unfolded, millions of people found themselves unable to get information about the tragedy. Traditional radio and television proved to be the best source of information, but people at work or in remote locations do not always have access to radio or TV news coverage. Americans abroad were frightened and frustrated because they couldn't find out what was happening at home. Most of the major news websites were flooded with users and were not always able to handle the traffic. Although the same problem plagued many streaming Internet radio broadcasts, the sheer number of Internet radio stations ensured that many people were able to tune in through their computers.
August 20, 2001 Radio Format Definitions
We've included definitions for the many radio station formats that are listed on this site. Radio formats can be confusing because there are no standards for defining formats and because so many formats overlap one another so closely. Just click the help icon (HELP ICON) next to a format name to get more information about that format.
June 7, 2001 New Feature! Find Stations by Zipcode
By popular demand, you can now search for radio stations by entering a U.S. five-digit zipcode. Just type it into the box where you would normally type a city name. You don't even need to enter a state name. Radio-Locator will find all of the radio stations that can be heard from that zipcode.
April 16, 2001 Canadian Stations Fixed
Canadian radio stations had not been showing up properly for quite some time. We now have over 1000 Canadian stations listed, although we only have a couple of hundred links to Canadian station websites. The good news is that you can update the URLs for these stations. The not-so-good news is that most of the technical data comes from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission which does not pretend to be the authoritative source for Canadian radio data. We will continue to make improvements on this in the future.
April 10, 2001 Station Owner Field Returns
The Station Information pages now show the station owner for both AM and FM U.S. radio stations.
April 4, 2001 Database Glitch
The FCC data that was downloaded early this morning was corrupted and resulted in the deletion most of the radio stations in the database. The site is back up now and steps are being taken to prevent this type of data corruption in the future.
March 16, 2001 Country List Alphabetized
I finally alphabetized that list of countries on the home page. (It was prompted by this review). Soon, I hope to make the home page dynamic so that the lists of formats and countries change automatically when new stations are added to the database.
February 26, 2001 FCC Errors Galore!
Well, I've received hundreds of email messages from people who are telling me that incorrect data is being displayed for many radio stations. Unfortunately the FCC's new database system seems to have many errors and inconsistencies. I have been trying a number of different ways of interpreting, collating, and displaying the data. Some methods seem to yeild better results. I think it's clear, however, that the FCC data will probably never be 100% accurate, so I will have to make corrections wherever I can.
February 18, 2001 FCC Data Retrieval System Back Online
We are now getting regular updates from the FCC's CDBS Database System. For the past 8 months, we have not been updating our FCC data, due to significant changes in their database organization. This process has been re-written and is now back online and database updates are occuring 24 hours.
February 8, 2001 Radio-Locator on AvantGo is Cool!
The "Radio-Locator Travel Guide" was featured in the AvantGo newsletter as a "New and Cool Channel". It is also featured on their website as a "Staff Favorite"!

We ran our survey for one month. Thank you to everyone who took the time to fill it out.
December 20, 2000 Survey Launched
We created an informal user survey to get a better idea of who is using this site. We will be using the results of this survey to decide what sorts of new features will be added to this site in the near future.
December 15, 2000 A Little Faster Now
We fixed a memory problem that was causing some pages to load very slowly. We think this is fixed and are happy to report that all the pages seem to be loading quite fast now.
December 12, 2000 Goodbye MIT!
We have officially moved off of WMBR's servers. We have a new home page, coupled with a slightly different look and feel. The biggest difference, however, is that the site should be many times faster than it was before.
October 4, 2000 New Name: Radio-Locator
Officially changed the name of the site from "The MIT List of Radio Stations on the Internet" to "Radio-Locator". Also added a form that lets you add your email address to our mailing list.
August 24, 2000 Quebec Bug Fixed
Fixed a bug that was preventing Quebec radio stations from appearing. (Note: I realize that most of the Canadan radio stations are still not showing up properly. I'm working on this. Thank you for your patience.)
Dec 15, 1999 MySQL Database Launched
Moved the entire site to a mySQL database engine. This is a free relational database engine. Until now, all of the data that was displayed on the site was stored in flat text files. We believe that this will tremendously improve speed and functionality in the future.
